CTS Animal Care Resources

Welcome to CTS Animals!

Important news: We’re working on updating to a new format. If you’re a teacher and would like to add input, please let us know (see contact info at the bottom of the page). This current site will remain in place until the new format is completed.

These resources encourage students to understand and apply best practices for the care and welfare of domestic animals. They present the latest developments in humane handling techniques, and are applicable to the Alberta environment.

These webpages correspond to the Alberta Education Program of Studies as revised in 2010. Teachers can use these resources to teach classes or individual students; or students can work independently, following the self-guided directions.

Each resource covers the complete program for the corresponding CTS course. The two introductory courses (1040 and 2020) allow students to choose one animal out of five – dogs, cats, horses, beef cattle or sheep. The 2020 course requires completion of Agriculture 3000 Agriculture Safety as a prerequisite. The Job Safety Skills Society has prepared a teachers’ manual for this course, and Alberta students can take the course through the Alberta Distance Learning Centre. Please note that this was not prepared by the Alberta SPCA.

You can organize these in groups of three or five to fit your particular circumstances. For example:

Agriculture 1040 Introduction to Animal Basics
Agriculture 3000 Agricultural Safety (from JSSS or ADLC)
Agriculture 2020 Animal Husbandry & Welfare
Agriculture 2070 Equine 1 or Agriculture 2040 Livestock 1
Agriculture 3070 Equine 2 or Agriculture 3040 Livestock 2

We want to acknowledge students who complete the course and anyone who sends us a copy of their final project will receive a certificate of completion.

We welcome your feedback – please send any comments to education@albertaspca.org or call 780-447-3600 and press 5. You can also ask us any questions about the resources or about the work of the Alberta SPCA.
